Aquaponics – soiless cultivation of vegetables and rearing of fish with only a tank of water

With the collaboration of Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) Department of Botany organized a seminar on ‘Aquaponics’ for the students and the local community. Dr Sr Christy, Principal, St. Joseph’s College (Irinjalakuda) inaugurated the seminar. Mr R. Sankarapillai, Asst. Director, MPEDA, Regional Division, Kochi 25, delivered the keynote address. Ms Manjusha K., MPEDA, Regional Division, Kochi, explained the various aspects of Aquaponics. As an outcome of the seminar we are maintaining an aquaponics unit in the college – soiless cultivation of vegetables and rearing of fish with only a tank of water. A purely organic culture in a limited space without fertilizer attracted the attention of students and the public. 120 students, 56 faculty members from the college and 42 local members attended the seminar.
