B.SC. Biotechnology (Aided)

B.Sc. Biotechnology is a three year graduate Programme under Choice Based Credit Semester System. The complementary courses for the Programme are Environmental Biotechnology and Chemistry. The Programme follows Language Reduced Pattern with four general courses in IPR, Research Methodology, Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management in the second year. Studying Biotechnology at the undergraduate level provides adequate knowledge in various subject areas like cell biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, r-DNA technology, Molecular Biology and so on. Since biotechnology is an application oriented field, focus is also given in providing practical knowledge by conducting laboratory experiments. A group project is also mandatory for the students in sixth semester. The UG programme will provide a strong foundation in biotechnology and  will equip students to join the workforce and/or advance to post-graduate education in different fields such as medical, industrial, environmental and agricultural biotechnology.

M.Sc. General Biotechnology(Self-financing)

This two year postgraduate programme focuses on the advanced knowledge of the application of biotechnology in various fields like agriculture, healthcare, industry etc. Biotechnology utilizes biological systems, living organisms or its parts to develop or create different products and it also grabs new possibility to make changes in the organisms’ genetic material (DNA). The curriculum is a mixture of both theoretical and practical sessions that helps students learn the implementation of the subject. To encourage formation of research aptitude in students, a research project is included in the curriculum.

M.Sc. in Biotechnology helps students in making a career in R&D or getting employed in companies like pharma and healthcare. Students who want to grab an opportunity to be associated with science and technology and contribute to the medical and pharma sector can choose M.Sc Biotechnology. The programme will help students acquire skills and technologies associated with advanced biological science. The programme will inculcate an innovative thinking and scientific reasoning among students.

Value Added Courses

BIOMT Microbial Techniques

Microbiology techniques are methods used for the study of microbes, including bacteria and microscopic fungi. They include methods to survey, culture, stain, identify, and manipulate microbes.  In this certificate course, we aim to provide hands-on-experience on the basic techniques of culturing microbes like preparation of media, sterilization, isolation of pure cultures, culturing and staining of fungi. This certificate course will enable students to learn Good Microbiological Practices. The course is conducted for undergraduate students in their second semester.

BIOBA Biocontrol agent production(pseudomonas)

Biocontrol agents are the natural enemies of pests, which can intervene the life cycle of insect pests in such a way that the crop damage is minimized. Biological control includes a wide range of approaches, from natural predators to biologically produced molecules. These bio agents can be conserved, preserved and multiplied under Laboratory condition for field release. Among all pest management techniques, the microbial agents are most effective in controlling the target insect-pest and require appropriate formulation and application.

This certificate course aims to teach students the importance of biocontrol agents and their mass production including labeling and packaging. It will create awareness about the utility of biological agents as an alternative to chemical pesticides and promote organic farming.

BIOOM  Oyster Mushroom Production

Oyster mushroom is an edible fungus which belongs to genus Pleurotus. Mushroom fits in very well with sustainable farming systems with huge medicinal and nutritional importance. Oyster mushroom is the rich source of protein, vitamins, minerals, fiber and other antioxidants like selenium.

Cultivation of mushrooms is introduced as a certificate course since the hands-on-experience will equip the students to carry out mushroom production as part of their home farming or as source of generating income. Oyster mushrooms are highly tolerant of variations in temperature, humidity, light levels and carbon dioxide levels, making it a great choice for first time growers. One of the main objectives of this certificate course is to establish economic self -reliance for the students as entrepreneurs.

BIOSI  SAFETY MEASURES IN LABORATORY

Study about biosafety measures is an important requirement for biotechnology students because their working environment always has several risks and hazards associated with chemicals and microorganisms. It is important that each student should have a proper awareness about the hazards. This certificate course will enable students to learn about biosafety and its importance. It aims to minimize the risks in the lab by ensuring that the students know how to handle these hazards. This certificate course also includes information about proper handling of important yet frequently used equipment in the laboratory.

BIOVC VERMICOMPOST PRODUCTION ( End on 2017)

Vermicomposting is regarded as a clean, sustainable, and zero-waste approach to manage organic wastes. It is a process based on earthworms and microorganisms, whose joint action provides degradation and detoxification of organic waste as well as conversion into a product to be used for agronomic purposes. This eco-friendly method is cost effective and is the best among other remediation processes.  This course is provided to educate students about the process of vermicomposting and its benefits. It will also motivate students towards organic farming as well as enhance employability and entrepreneurship skills among them.
