The Department of History St. Joseph's college, Irinjalakuda was established in 1964 with promising growth and progress much closer to the expectation of all over the last 57 years. It is significant, dynamic and influential to the shaping and subsequent creation of our future generation . An infectious spirit of dedication and co-operation is the secret of our success.History department is one of the oldest departments of the college. The departmental star shot out its first brilliant prong into the horizon with the introduction of the U.G course in History in 1967. The kick start to the Department was given when Miss. Saradamma, a veteran professor, retired from Women's College, Thiruvananthapuram assumed the stewardship of our infant department. Since then the vista of the Department widened and the multi-pronged star slowly and steadily started illuminating the college campus with a vibrant vision and mission on the march. In 1971, Sr. Ambrose took up the headship of the department. Her experience and practical wisdom counted a lot in the beginning of the department.
History department really created a golden history and found a place in the annals of the institution. The first rank holder from the degree classes comes from the historians. Ms.Joyce Pereira brought laurels by her unique victory in 1972.It again goes to the credit of the department that the first doctor of St.Joseph's belongs to them.Dr.Sr Clerissa who took her doctorate in 1984 is the first PhD holder of St.Joseph's. Now the department has completed 57 years of highly-seasoned existence with the under graduate course with General Economics and History of Journalism in India as the Subsidiary subjects. What the department today is the outcome of conscientious work of the faculty members over the years - Rev. Sr.Ambrose,Ms. Annie Jose, Rev.Sr.Celine, Ms.Elizabeth Joshi. Dr.Sr. Clerisa, Ms.Joyce Vivera, Dr.Sr Lissitta . Dr.Sr.Reshmi.
