The Department of Social Work came into existence on 20th November 2002 (as per the Government order GO (MS) No-142/2002/HEDU) with the Post Graduate Programme in Social Work (MSW). The department is deep rooted in the great demand of quality and value based higher education with multifaceted action plan by giving the importance to the mission of our college, “to groom academically and globally competent women. The department promotes a culture that supports professional grooming, freedom to initiate, innovative and experiment, an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust and cultural enrichment.

 

SCOPE OF SOCIAL WORK

 

Professional social work has been developed in Kerala for the last two decades. Social work has emerged as levels discipline with professionalism in the field of community development, counseling, personal management, health care, women and child welfare, disaster management etc. trained professional social workers are the inevitable components of human development activities promoted by the government and non government organisations.

 

AIM OF COURSE

 

  1. To build competent, professional social workers to meet the global demand.
  2. To impart value based knowledge on social Justice, Empowerment and impression regarding Democracy, Welfarism and religious Pluralism.
  3. To create an atmosphere, which generates social sensitivity regarding social issues and crisis.
  4. To undertake social research, field action projects in the innovative fields of the profession of social work.
  5. To empower the marginalized groups such as Women, Dalits, tribals, Labour class, Children, Old age, and Differently Abled.
  6. To strengthen the participatory approaches in all levels of development processes.
  7. To undertake activities in the protection and promotion of Human rights.
  8. To perceive the total human growth ensuring physical, psychological, social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
  9. To undertake activities on rehabilitation of the victims of Development Induced Displacement.

 

ADMISSION CRITERION PROCEDURE

 

The college publishes the prospectus/Brochures in each year and advertises in the College Website for UG and PG. The admission procedure has three steps for PG viz. Entrance Test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview conducted by the college. Students having graduation from any recognized University can apply to the Entrance Test. As it is an interdisciplinary course the University recognized graduates having at least 50% in aggregates (General category) can apply. A 5% relaxation is allowed for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and OBC students. As per the Govt. norms 20% seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste and scheduled Tribe. The institution encourages to intake these students in the merit seats rather than the reservation.

 

ATTITUDE AND SKILL

 

The Social Work theory and practice ultimately focus on generating professional attitudes on humanity which incorporate, genuineness, commitment, trustworthiness, optimism and more over qualities for human growth.

The curriculum is designed to enrich skills in organizing and managing different development activities. The field exposure of the students inculcates skill in building relationship, communication, leadership, programme planning and management, event management, documentation, resource mobilization, evaluation, research and documentation.
