St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Irinjalakuda has an established unit that functions for the empowerment of the SC/ST community of the college. By dissolving the lines of social and economic disparity, this unit operates to fulfil the institutional promise of equality in opportunity through the conduct of various academic and non-academic activities designed specifically for the upliftment of this community. There is a systematic and orderly mechanism for the redressal of grievances. The students may approach the cell through any means to clear their queries and get their grievances addressed.

  • To ensure there is no caste based discrimination in our college.
  • To aware the SC/ST students regarding various scholarships program of State Government and UGC.

The minority cell of St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Irinjalakuda was institutionalized with the intentions of working towards the welfare of the minority community in the college. It organises and coordinates activities in the campus ensuring the equal and active participation of all. Additionally, it functions as a platform to address the grievances of this miniscule yet valuable community and aids in its upliftment through supportive initiatives in academic and non-academic aspects through the organised and planned efforts of the minority cell. The Activities of the Cell

  • The Cell is committed to provide assistance for minority students through counselling, personality development, development of communication skill, remedial coaching, tutorial classes, preparatory classes for professional and employment purposes, etc.
  • Orientation Programme in English Language: This Programme is organized with a view to orienting students towards improving academic skill in English Language.
  • Orientation Programme in Business Mathematics & Statistics: This Programme is organized with a view to developing academic proficiency in Business Mathematics & Business Statistics.
  • Orientation Programme in Accounting (for non-commerce students): This Programme is organized for non-commerce students for imparting general idea on basic accounting at preliminary level.
  • Personality Development & Communication Skill: The basic objective of this scheme is to improve confidence & communication skill in competing in the practical filed.
  • Spiritual Empowerment: Apart from the weekly ethics sessions, spiritual empowerment talks are provided by experts to the non-Catholic students including the minorities like Muslims
  • Remedial Coaching: Remedial Coaching is organized with a view to (a) improving academic skills of the students in various subjects, (b providing a stronger foundation for further academic work, (c) strengthening their knowledge, and comprehension of subjects

St. Joseph’s College(autonomous), Irinjalakuda values and fosters a healthy environment for the holistic growth of our students through institutionalising a systematic and impartial grievance redressal mechanism. It is an assurance that their voices are heard, valued and acted upon by providing them with the warmth of confidence required to outgrow the web of complexities as they progress in life. Furthermore, it enables the institution in understanding the shortcomings of its policies and practices to compete with its yester self and perform better every new day. Any student can approach and notify the grievance redressal cell in regard with any general complaints concerning this institution.

Grievance Redressal Mechanism

A bonafide student or staff is provided with numerous means to notify the institution of any grievances concerning the institution or the activities in the institution. The aggrieved can opt any among the following methods to alert the authorities:

  • Direct approach: The students can approach any teacher, vice-principals, principal or the local manager of the institution to report any grievance of any nature.
  • Complaint boxes: There are college complaint boxes lodged on every floors of the college buildings. The police complaint box is placed in the portico of the college. The grievances can be written and dropped in them anytime. The grievances other than those concerning sexual harassment complaints can be dropped in unanimously.
  • Post: Letters of complaint can be sent through the official postal address of the institution. (The time of action does not include the delays caused in receiving the complaints.) The official postal address of the college:

The link to the Grievance Redressal Cell (CGRC) that address general complaints and the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) that address issues and complaints related to occurrences of sexual harassment and ragging in the campus are conveniently provided in the website.
  • Phone numbers: The complaints can also be communicated as unanimous phone calls, WhatsApp messages or SMS through the contact details of the concerned committee authorities displayed widely in the campus through posters, notice boards, brochures and the college academic diary.
  • Induction Programs: The students are duly informed of the functioning and mechanism of the College Grievance Redressal Cell (CGRC) and Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and the contact details of the concerning authorities are shared during the program.

The institution pledges on maintaining the confidentiality of the issue and the identity of the aggrieved despite the means of approach adopted by the victim/person authorized to report the grievance. The college engage in strict actions with immediate effects after consultation with the concerned authorities and impartial investigations.

Grievance Redressal minutes

Being a women’s only college, the safety and security promised by the institution becomes one of the prime factors for high student enrolment every year in this college. This is additionally boosted with the constitution of an active Internal Complaints Committee in the college that is intolerant to any form of discriminations and violence against women. The unit not just reduces the anti-social attacks based upon gender but also paves ways for the upliftment of the women community through sensitization programs, awareness sessions, workshops, seminars and invited talks. The unit ensures confidentiality and is approachable by any convenient means as considered appropriate by an aggrieved student for registering any complaints that fall under the jurisdiction of this cell.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance if an employee or a student chooses to file a complaint with the police;
  • Provide mechanisms of dispute redressal and dialogue to anticipate and address issues through just and fair conciliation without undermining complainant’s rights, and minimize the need for purely punitive approaches that lead to further resentment, alienation or violence;
  • Protect the safety of the complainant by not divulging the person’s identity, and provide the mandatory relief by way of sanctioned leave or relaxation of attendance requirement or transfer to another department or supervisor as required during the pendency of the complaint, or also provide for the transfer of the offender;
  • Ensure that victims or witnesses are not victimised or discriminated against while dealing with complaints of sexual harassment; and
  • Ensure prohibition of retaliation or adverse action against a covered individual because the employee or the student is engaged in protected activity.

Process of making complaint of sexual harassment

  • An aggrieved person is required to submit a written complaint to the ICC within three months from the date of the incident and in case of a series of incidents within a period of three months from the elate of the last incident.
  • Provided that where such complaint cannot be made in writing, the Presiding Officer or any Member of the Internal Committee shall render all reasonable assistance to the person for making the complaint in writing:
  • Provided further that the ICC may, for the reasons to be accorded in the writing, extend the time limit not exceeding three months, if it is satisfied that the circumstances were such which prevented the person from filing a complaint within the said period.
  • Friends, relatives, Colleagues, Co-students, Psychologist, or any other associate of the victim may file the complaint in situations where the aggrieved person is unable to make a complaint on account of physical or mental in capacity.

St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Irinjalakuda is highly intolerant to ragging in the campus and takes severe actions to combat and curb this social evil. The anti-ragging committee of this college is constituted as per the order of the Supreme Court and the regulations from UGC to preserve an environment that is healthy and free for developing mature individuals who recognise the dehumanising effect of such anti-social activities. Students can intimidate any incidence of ragging in the campus through any available means to any of the committee members whose contact details are shared through induction programs, hand-overs, posters, college calendar and the college official website. This committee is headed by the principal of the college and it pledges to take strict and immediate actions depending on the severity of the incidence.

What Constitutes Ragging

Ragging constitutes one or more of any of the following acts:

  • Any conduct by any student or students whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness a fresher or any other student.
  • Indulging in rowdy or indisciplined activities by any student or students which causes or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship, physical or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in any fresher or any other student.
  • Asking any student to do any act which such student will not in the ordinary course do and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame, or torment or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche of such fresher or any other student.
  • Any act by a senior student that prevents, disrupts or disturbs the regular academic activity of any other student or a fresher.
  • Exploiting the services of a fresher or any other student for completing the academic tasks assigned to an individual or a group of students.
  • Any act of financial extortion or forceful expenditure burden put on a fresher or any other student by students
  • Any act of physical abuse including all variants of it: sexual abuse, homosexual assaults, stripping, forcing obscene and lewd acts, gestures, causing bodily harm or any other danger to health or person;
  • Any act or abuse by spoken words, emails, post, public insults which would also include deriving perverted pleasure, vicarious or sadistic thrill from actively or passively participating in the discomfiture to fresher or any other student.
  • Any act that affects the mental health and self-confidence of a fresher or any other student with or without an intent to derive a sadistic pleasure or showing off power, authority or superiority by a student over any fresher or any other student.

Complete inclusiveness of individuals is one of the primal factors that St. Joseph’s College strives for through a holistic educational approach. A specialised cell functions in the campus in accordance with the XI plan guidelines of the University Grants Commission for the OBC community that works towards the upliftment and grievance redressal of this community.
