Social responsible campaign Titled ‘’Save Alappad”

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication initiated an environment friendly and social responsible campaign Titled ‘’Save Alappad” on 17-01-2019. Alappad, a coastal village in Kollam is facing the brunt of mining. Two government owned companies Indian Rare Earth, and Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited began mining beach sand in the region. The years of unregulated mining Alappad which had an area of 89.5 square kilometer has been reduced to just 8 square kilometers by 2019. The students conducted a silent protest march in the corridors of each class rooms and they made charts and placards. The students made paper boats and hanged it in the tress of the college which symbolized the death of Alappad; a coastal area. The students also organized a flash mob at the noon interval and also imparted information about Alappad. Arya Thomas T of first semester Journalism and Mass Communication presented a report about the history and issues of Alappad. The students asked many questions to the students from other departments about Alappad and they measure the awareness of the students about the issue.  The students also distributed hand written cards to the staff and students inviting them to participate in the protest and save nature.
